If communication is so important, why is it so hard to do? Our initial response is protection. We jump into defense mode in hopes of protecting ourselves from potential harm. But words aren’t the potential harm, our feelings are. Our words are a result of a feeling-based reaction. When we learn how to tune into them, communication becomes much more effective. Creating an emotionally safe environment where people can accurately identify and express their feelings helps us truly see others at their core.
